Awhina House ECE

Works involved installing a large deck, built in sandpit & sunshade, deck with 2x kit set sheds, balancing steppers and a perimeter fence.

Project Overview

Adapt was engaged by Piritahi Northcote to undertake the construction of the outdoor area for the Awhina Northcote Community House and Early Childhood Education (ECE) Center. The project aimed to create a safe and engaging environment for the community, particularly focusing on the outdoor spaces that cater to both children and adults.

Scope of work

Adapt's scope of work encompassed various elements to enhance the outdoor area:

  1. Installation of steppers with rope balancing walkers

    • Integration of steppers with rope balancing walkers to promote physical activity and balance skills among children.

  2. Small deck and assembly of large kit-set sheds

    • Construction of a small deck to serve as a multifunctional space and assembly of two large kit-set sheds for additional storage and utility purposes.

  3. Large deck with stairs, sandpit and sunshade

    • Creation of a spacious deck featuring stairs for accessibility, a dedicated sandpit area for play, and the installation of a sunshade to ensure comfort during outdoor activities.

  4. Perimeter fencing

    • Installation of perimeter fencing to enhance security and demarcate the property boundaries.

Challenges

Several challenges were encountered during the project, requiring meticulous attention to detail and adherence to safety standards:

  1. Child-safety standards

    • Ensuring all construction elements met rigorous child-safety standards, including the elimination of sharp edges to prevent injuries to the young users.

  2. Material management

    • Extra diligence to ensure no nails or hazardous materials were left on-site, prioritising a clean and safe environment for the community.

  3. Anti-slip finishes

    • Implementation of anti-slip finishes on timber surfaces to mitigate the risk of accidents, especially in areas exposed to various weather conditions.

  4. Access points and security

    • Prevention of unintended access points or escape routes, emphasising the need for a secure outdoor space for both children and adults.

Outcome

The successful completion of the project resulted in the transformation of the outdoor area into a vibrant and safe community space. The careful consideration of safety standards, careful material management, and the integration of engaging features have contributed to providing a conducive environment for learning and recreational activities.
